SENIORS
Class 1 - Ground Transportation
#2 - Ride share (Uber, Lyft) is ranked first because it is easy and available upon request. Safety features allow rides to share locations with others. Although it is likely more expensive than public transportation, it will provide door to door service, offering the greatest convenience.
#3 - Public Transportation (bus) is ranked second as it is generally safe and regulated. It is very affordable. The bus route will be on a schedule (which may or may not be convenient for your use) and it may be necessary to walk to a stop or transfer.
#1 - Hotel shuttle is ranked third since it may not be available when you need it. It would require advance arrangements but would likely be free.
#4 - Rental vehicle is ranked last. It is the most expensive and likely not available to a driver who is 18 years old.
Class 2 - Graduation Invitations
#4 - Big News was the ranked first because it met all of Rhyanna's expectations: east to read fonts, room for 4 photos, other color choices (but had purple), less than $2 per card and plenty of space for party details.
#2 - Sidebar also featured 4 photos with lots of space for party details. It did not have multiple color options, so was placed second.
#1 - Photo Line was placed third as it had 6 photos but limited space for party details and limited color options.
#3 Exquisite Arch was placed last since it exceeded her budget and had limited space for party details. It also had more photos than she desired.
Class 3 - Sunscreen
#2 - CeraVe Hydrating Sheer Sunscreen SPF 30 met all four key criteria: SPF 30 or higher – Clearly labeled SPF 30; Broad spectrum – Protects against both UVA and UVB rays; Water-resistant – Lasts up to 80 minutes in water; Gentle on skin – Specifically labeled for sensitive skin,
#4 - Neutrogena is ranked second. It’s designed for the face and acne-prone skin, but may not be ideal for full-body use due to its smaller size and facial focus.
#1 Banana Boat was ranked third. Spray sunscreens are harder to apply evenly, especially on the face, and carry inhalation risks.
#3 Hawaiian Tropic was placed last as it was only SPF 15. It’s good for body use but may not be ideal for the face due to added fragrance and lack of sensitive-skin labeling.
Class 4 - Beverage Bottles
This class had the following criteria – fits in a car cupholder, ease of cleaning, insulation and durability.
4. Yeti Rambler ranked first - Best overall balance of insulation, durability, ease of cleaning, and cupholder fit.
3 – Owala - Leakproof and well-insulated, Lid and straw are dishwasher safe but bottle is hand wash only. Not for use with hot beverages.
2 – Hydro Flask was ranked third with excellent insulation and durability, fits most cupholders, but not dishwasher safe.
1 – CamelBak Eddy was ranked last. Although lightweight and easy to clean, it lacks insulation and may retain taste.
Class 5 – Fast Food
#3 with Grilled chicken sandwich and fruit cup ranks first because it offers grilled chicken, low sodium, multiple food groups, and low fat, making it the best choice for Lucy.
#4 – turkey and veggie sub is ranked second with whole grain bread, cheese, and fresh vegetables, but its sodium is slightly higher than #3 and it contains fewer food groups.
#1 – crispy chicken sandwich and apple slices ranks third—it meets the sodium criteria and has chicken, but its fat content is far above the limit.
#2 – grilled chicken ranch sandwich and side salad is last because it exceeds both sodium and fat limits, making it the least suitable option.
INTERMEDIATES
Class 7 – Kitchen Clean Rules
Situation: Cassidy has been exercising the family dog. She comes inside to make a batch of muffins. Rank the following situations, keeping in mind the recommended “clean rules” of the kitchen.
#3 is placed first because it’s the best choice as Cassidy follows the clean rules of the kitchen: wash hands with soap and warm water; wash the food preparation area with soap and warm water; keep hands away from face and hair while cooking; pin hair back out of face before beginning to cook, wear clean clothes or an apron; keep cooking area clean as you cook; use hot wash water and rinse water for dishes and equipment; drain or wipe dishes dry with a clean dish towel.
#3 is placed over #4 because a disposable paper towel is more sanitary then reusing a dish towel for hands, preparation area and dishes.
#4 is placed over # 2 because Cassidy follows most of the clean rules. In situation #2, she does not pull her hair back, put on an apron over her dirty (doggy) clothes, and does not clean up the kitchen with warm water.
#1 is placed last because she does not follow any of the clean kitchen rules.
Class 8 – Proper Introductions
#3 is placed first because it demonstrated appropriate behaviors when making an introduction of an older woman to a young man. Mollie stands to make the introduction, she introduces her mother first and Andrew stands to shake her hand and make a polite reply.
#1 is placed second because Mollie stands to introduce her mother to Andrew.
#2 is placed third because both Mollie and Andrew remain seated for the introduction, but they do shake hands.
#4 is placed last because both Mollie and Andrew remain seated for the introduction and Mollie should have introduced her mother first, instead of Andrew. There is no hand-shake.
Class 9 – Protein Choices
#1 protein choice (chicken breast) is placed first. It is the recommended serving size (3 ounces) and provides ½ of the recommended daily protein for the family. Heidi, her sister and mother need 5 ounces of protein daily while her dad needs 6 ounces. The chicken breast is low in fat and calories and is a good source of iron.
#3 protein choice (roasted cured ham slice) is placed second. It is the recommended serving size (3 ounces) and provides ½ of the recommended daily protein for the family…5 ounces for Heidi, her sister and mother; 6 ounces for her dad. The ham contains twice as much fat as the chicken, about the same amount of calories, and is slightly higher in iron.
#2 protein choice (broiled beef hamburger) is placed third. It is the recommended serving size and provides ½ of the recommended daily protein for the family…5 ounces for Heidi, her sister and mother; 6 ounces for her dad. The hamburger contains four times as much fat as the chicken and considerably more fat than the ham. It is also higher in calories. While the beef does contain more iron than both the chicken and ham, consistently eating foods higher in fat and calories can lead to obesity and other diseases.
#4 protein choice (fried scrambled eggs) is placed last. It is the recommended serving size and provides 2 ounces of protein for the family. The eggs are fried so highest in fat; about the same calories as the hamburger; and high in iron. Cooking the eggs using no stick cooking spray oil would lower the fat content and make the scrambled eggs a healthier option for supper. While the iron content is high in the eggs, eating foods higher in fat and calories can lead to obesity and other diseases.
Class 10 – Sun Safety
Situation – Emily wears sunscreen regularly and needs additional skin and eye protection from the sun while she spends time at the lake. All of the sunglasses provide adequate UV protection.
Three is placed over #4 because both the hat and sunglasses in #3 are made of durable materials and would stand up to daily use. The hat provides sun protection for the face and neck. The glasses are lightweight and the neck cord would help Emily keep her sunglasses handy. While the cap and glasses in #4 would provide adequate sun protection, both are less durable than #3.
Four is placed over #2 in a close placing. The baseball camp in #4 would provide good face protection. While the sunglasses in 2 are very durable, they would be a bit too heavy for a 6 year old to wear comfortably.
Two is placed over #1 as the items in #2 would provide fair sun protection and are durable items. The bottom choice - #1 – is placed last because it provides the least sun protection of the class.
